How-To: Setting up your DrayTek VOIP Phone

Setting up the DrayTek series of routers is one of the most painless voip device setups for the faktortel network.

Please follow the graphical instructions below for a complete run-through of how this is done. Please note that any writing in the images in red needs to be changed to a value in the text describing the image.

Step 1:

The first thing we need to do is connect to the router. Please follow the steps below to do this:

  1. Make sure your DrayTek router is plugged into your ADSL connection (your phone line) and connected to the internet.
  2. Make sure your DrayTek router also has a cable coming out of one of the slots at the back to either a computer OR a hub or switch device.
  3. Make sure you have a standard telephone handset plugged into the port labelled FXS1 on the back of your draytek router
  4. Turn on your computer and load up your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Etc.).
  5. Go to the "Address" bar of your browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 and press the enter key.
  6. If everything has gone well you should now see a screen like the one below.

At this screen simply press the OK button, DO NOT enter in a username or password.

Step 2:

You should now see a screen which looks like this:

At this screen, simply move your mouse over the "VoIP Setup" link. (The one politely circled in red on this image) and click your mouse button.

Step 3:

You should now be presented with a screen like this:

At this screen, simply move your mouse over the "SIP Related Function Setup" link. (The one politely circled in red on this image) and click your mouse button.

Step 4:

You should now be at a screen which looks like this:

Please follow the steps below to correctly fill in this menu with the needed information:
Fill in the fields in the menu like so.
  • SIP Port: 5060
  • Registrar: sip.faktortel.com.au
  • Make sure the check-box under port 1 is checked (has a tick in it)
  • Under the Port 1 section where it says Name please enter in the phone number sent to you by FaktorTel (E.g. 09123456)
  • Under the Port 1 section where it says Password please enter in the password sent to you by FaktorTel.
  • Under the Port 1 section where it says Expiry Time please set this to 10 Minutes
  • Please make sure port 2 is not checked (no tick in the box for port 2)
After you have filled in the menu as above please click the ok button.

Step 5:

You should be taken back to the menu which looks like this:

At this screen, simply move your mouse over the "CODEC/RTP/DTMF Setup" link. (The one politely circled in red on this image) and click your mouse button.

You should now see a screen like this:

Please follow the instructions below for setting up this menu:
  • Under the "codecs" section please change the option where the writing is in red to one of the two following values

    1. If you have a DIALUP or a slow (usually cheap) ADSL or CABLE connection please set this option to "g729 A/B"
    2. If you have a fast BROADBAND internet connection please change this setting to "g711".

  • Please set the rest of this menu as it appears in the screen above. Most of these will be the default settings of the draytek router.
Note: For AUSTRALIA, for the standard $29.95 per month ADSL or CABLE connections being offered by some companies please choose the codec "g729" you will receive much better sound quality.

Once you have completed filling in the menu please click the OK button.

Step 6:

You should now be at a screen which looks like this:

Please click on the "Main Menu" button to be taken back to your routers main menu.

Now you may close your browser window and you should be able to enjoy VOIP communications through the handset connected to your DrayTek Router.

Note: In some instances you may have to turn your router off, wait for 5 seconds and turn it back on again to connect successfully to our network once you change your settings.
